Marquette University 1977 NCAA Champs vintage t-shirt coming soon

Retro U. has strayed off the "defunct college football bowl game" path to create a vintage-style t-shirt to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Marquette University's NCAA men's basketball championship. The 1977 Warrior basketball team finished 25-7, including a dramatic 67-59 win over North Carolina in the national title game in Atlanta. The game was legendary coach Al McGuire's last as a head coach. The Warriors' top performers were Bo Ellis, Jerome Whitehead and Butch Lee.

The shirt will be available at the Marquette Spirit Shop on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee sometime in February. Additional retail outlets will be announced soon.

Grape Bowl vintage t-shirt

Played in the late 1940s, the Grape Bowl was held at a stadium by the same name in Lodi, California. Retro U.'s vintage-style Grape Bowl t-shirt is loosely based on the program cover (pictured above) from the 1947 contest between the College of the Pacific and Utah State. Pacific won the game 35-21 to finish the season 10-1.

Salad Bowl vintage t-shirt

The Salad Bowl was played on New Year's Day annually from 1948 to 1952 at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix. The first game featured Nevada beating North Texas State, 13-6. The following year Drake edged Arizona, 14-13. The final three games saw Xavier, OH beat Arizona State, 33-21; Miami, OH beat Arizona State, 34-21; and Houston beat Dayton, 26-21.

Retro U. has created a cool vintage-style t-shirt to celebrate the Salad Bowl. The shirt is based on the design pictured above based on the 1948 Salad Bowl program. The shirt will be available for sale in the next few months. Stay tuned to this blog for more information.

Aviation Bowl vintage t-shirt

The Aviation Bowl, played in Dayton, Ohio, has one of college football's briefest bowl histories. The first Aviation Bowl was played on December 9, 1961, and featured Western Michigan University against the University of New Mexico. The game was won, 28-12, by New Mexico, but attendance was so sparse at Welcome Stadium that the event was cancelled after just one year.

To commemorate this short-lived event, Retro U. has produced a ultra-hip vintage style t-shirt. The shirt design is based on the actual design and color scheme from the Aviation Bowl program (pictured above). The Aviation Bowl shirts will be in stores soon. Retail outlets will be announced as they become available.
